“If I can be an example of getting sober, then I can be an example of starting over”
Through the telling of his personal experiences in his music, Macklemore has helped more people than I think he even realizes. He speaks of issues that most artists don’t dare address, same-sex marriage, addiction, recovery, and relapse. The latter 3 are how he initially touched my life. This song is SO powerful, beyond powerful, it can heal, inspire and motivate. It allows someone who has relapsed to know that it’s just a part of their journey and they can start over, they are not alone.
This is probably my favorite song on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s groundbreaking new album for the reasons you mentioned above! His honesty and subject matter on this track gives me chills. The fact that he independently pushed 72,000 units in the first week is a testament to Macklemore’s talent and I hope he inspires artists to not be afraid to be themselves and to address subjects other than the norm.
